Whoopi Goldberg is the latest celebrity to ditch Twitter following Elon Musk’s controversial takeover of the platform.
Speaking on Monday’s episode of “The View,” the “Ghost” actress said the social media platform has become a “mess” — revealing she is deleting her account, which boasted 1.6 million followers.
“It’s been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter and this place is a mess,” Goldberg said.
Twitter fired roughly half of its workforce on Friday with an email to staff explaining the cuts were “necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.”
Musk also raised eyebrows by rolling out an $8-a-month Twitter Blue subscription, making it possible for any account to become verified.
“I’m getting off today because I just feel like it’s so messy, and I’m tired of now having certain kinds of attitudes blocked now getting back on. So I’m gonna get out, and if it settles down enough and I feel more comfortable maybe I’ll come back. But as of tonight, I’m done with Twitter.”
“People keep saying it’s free speech, but all speech is not free speech,” Goldberg added, referring to Musk’s pledge to make the platform a bastion of free speech.
“Some speech is not OK free speech,” Goldberg said. “So everybody has to agree on that, but if people keep saying ‘You hurt my free speech’ it’s going to be a problem. You know what? This is our problem. But it ain’t my problem today because I’m out.”
Other notable names have also quit Twitter following Musk’s takeover, including supermodel Gigi Hadid, who called the platform a “cesspool of hate & bigotry.”
“For a long time, but especially with its new leadership,” Hadid, who boasted over 10.5 million followers, wrote of Musk, “it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its [sic] not a place I want to be a part of.”
“I can’t say it’s a safe place for anyone,” she continued, “nor a social platform that will do more good than harm.”
“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes, who boasted 1.9 million followers, announced her departure from the platform, tweeting, “Not hanging around for whatever Elon has planned. Bye.”
Toni Braxton also said she would be staying away from the social media site, telling her 1.8 million followers its “no longer a safe space.”
“I’m shocked and appalled at some of the ‘free speech’ I’ve seen on this platform since its acquisition,” she tweeted. “Hate speech under the veil of ‘free speech’ is unacceptable; therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons, and other POC.”
