Fans of “Jeopardy!” are blasting the show’s “misleading” final clue that left all three contestants stumped.
The Final Jeopardy clue for the May 1 episode was in the category “18th Century Literature.”
Host Mayim Bialik read the clue: “The first name of this title character is from Hebrew for ‘devoted to God’; his last name suggests he can be easily duped.”
The first contestant answered, incorrectly, “Who is Candide?”
The next contestant, writing, “Who is Jude Obscure?” was also wrong.
The final contestant seemed to know he was wrong by the time Bialik turned to him, laughing as she read his response, “Who is Simple Simon?”
The answer producers were looking for was: “Who is Gulliver? Lemuel Gulliver from Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels.’ “
Fans weren’t happy with the clue and took to Twitter to let the show know.
“I believe this clue was misleading. It led one to believe the answer was a person with two names,” one person tweeted.
“I tried to think of names with ‘El’ and then tried to remember if there were any books about people named Elijah… forgot about Lemuel,” someone else said.
“Terrible clue!” a fan exclaimed.
However, some people were surprised none of the contestants got it right.
“Super proud that I got this right, especially considering none of the contestants did,” one viewer boasted.
“Got it swiftly,” one person shared.
“This was a strange one, I’m surprised they all missed it,” someone said.
They continued, ” ‘Easily duped’ sent my mind straight to ‘gullible’, and even not being certain of the first name part, the correct answer should’ve at least been a guess for one of them.”
