‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast Episode 145: Mets’ Lineup Badly Needs a Spark

The Mets are too good to be this bad.

Right now, they’re unwatchable.

When they pitch well, they can’t hit.

When they hit, they give up too many runs.

They are making baserunning blunders, defensive mishaps, failing to drive runners in and struggling to end up in the win column.

A 4-9 record against the horrible teams they just played is unacceptable.

The road doesn’t get any easier with the MLB-best Rays coming to Queens for three games this week.

The Mets need a spark.

Call up Mark Vientos or Ronny Mauricio and put them in the lineup …now.

To talk about the Mets’ rough stretch, the lineup needing some help, Justin Verlander’s long-awaited Citi Field Mets debut and look ahead to a tough homestand, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • BRUTAL DC WEEKEND: Mets’ bats are asleep. They have not homered in five games. They are making mental mistakes. Francisco Alvarez getting picked off at first base with the bases loaded to end an inning just can not happen. Brandon Nimmo needs to let Starling Marte catch that ball in the outfield, especially after he called for it. David Peterson was terrible again and is having a nightmare season. He probably won’t/shouldn’t pitch again for the Mets this season with his 8.08 ERA. Mets are 1-7 in his starts.
  • METS LINEUP NEED A SPARK: Gary Sanchez has been hot in Syracuse. He has a potential opt out in his contract Friday. Do the Mets call him up? Should they go with Mark Vientos? Ronny Mauricio? Should they cut Tommy Pham? Mets have not won a series since April 19. A month without a series win is almost hard to do. This team has not put it all together. They still are just a game out of a wild-card spot with how bad they have played. They need more power behind Pete Alonso. They are getting no production from whoever hits fifth.
  • VERLANDER’S HOME DEBUT: Justin Verlander finally makes his home debut at Citi Field on Tuesday against the Rays. The Mets were 4-9 against the bad teams they just played. Now they get the best team in baseball coming to town. Carlos Carrasco will be back this week. No more Peterson. No more Joey Lucchesi.
  • NELSON FIGUEROA SPANISH ACADEMY: In honor of the Mets butt-slapping celebration Sunday during their eight-run inning, Figgie teaches me how to say it in Spanish. I also learn how to say “shake it off” and “a spark.”
