Jake Gyllenhaal has many accomplishments under his belt, but the Hollywood star can now add taking a punch from UFC superstar Conor McGregor to the list.
Gyllenhaal, who is staring in the remake of the 1989 movie “Road House” alongside the MMA fighter, revealed during a Monday night appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that McGregor accidentally hit him while filming a scene.
“By mistake, he clocked me in the face,” Gyllenhaal explained.”We would do a take [of] fake fighting, and then we’d go watch the monitors to see it back, to see what worked.”
Gyllenhaal, whose film credits also include “Southpaw” and “Spider-Man: Far from Home,” said the accidental punch occurred while filming at 3 a.m. while McGregor “was talking to me really close.”
“And he was like, ‘Yeah, that left hook looks good, but then when you do it, boom!’ And he hit me by mistake,” Gyllenhaal said while recreating the shocked look on both his and McGregor’s face when it happened.
The A-list movie star said he returned the favor when he accidentally hit McGregor with a car door.
“I, by mistake, then slammed his face with a car door. Like, legit,” Gyllenhaal continued, later adding that it did not phase the MMA fighter.
Gyllenhaal lauded the work McGregor did with him and how helpful the 35-year-old had been with him while working on fight scenes.
“He was always great with me,” Gyllenhaal said. “He would tell me to do things like, ‘Oh, you know, turn your hand, move a little bit more this way to try to make it look more real.’”
The punch to the face wasn’t the only injury Gyllenhaal suffered while filming the flick where he plays an ex-UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys after ending his fighting career.
Gyllenhaal told Dax Shepard on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, according to TMZ, that he got a staph infection after cutting his hand with glass while filming a different fight scene.
“Road House” will be available to stream on Prime Video starting March 21.
